Promoting quality education for all.

Jump In

It is Global Action Week—a week used to highlight all that is being done for the right to education and what is being done to protect that right to education around the world. It is also a great time to jump in and get involved. Jump in to help the 57 million children out of school, jump in to help the 1 in the 3 girls that will be married before the age of 18 in the developing world instead of in school and most pressing jump in for the schoolgirls of Nigeria who need a world community to stand with them, their families and their community.

Let’s talk about bathrooms

by Katherine Surko ,

I’ve always taken them for granted, and have just assumed that whenever I go to school, a restaurant, or any other public space, that there would be a clean, private, easily accessible facility. I never really thought about how my life would be different if I didn’t have access to a bathroom, and I never took into consideration the critical role they play in our everyday lives or how they affect access education.

Let Other Children Follow in Lupita’s Footsteps

Laura Henderson,

Lupita Nyong'o was a smashing success at this year's Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. Not only did she win an Oscar for best supporting actress in Twelve Years a Slave, but her words touched the hearts and souls of so many who listened to her. As she accepted her Oscar, Lupita said "When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from your dreams are valid."

Holidays, Children and Wise Men

In my native Spain, January 6 is a very special day for little boys and girls. All over the country the Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men) riding their camels brought the gifts and toys the children requested several weeks ago. These imaginary characters, with a little help of the adults in their lives, will fulfill the children's dreams. Some will be disappointed. They will not have received the doll they asked for or the expensive video game their friend owns, but, even if they don't get all the toys they wanted, they will have what many children can only dream about. They will return to school the next day.

Active Partnerships and Engaged Empowerment Equals Lasting Change

I have to admit that I am not much of a fan of holiday decorations. My mother, who loves the spirit of giving and the idea of Santa, collected over 250 Santas in the last 20 years, and something about dragging those down from the attic each year hasn't really inspired me to deck the halls. This bah humbug spirit doesn't extend to Christmas music, though. I grew up in choir, so I know and love the lyrics to most of the classical and pop songs on the radio during the holiday season. Nonetheless, there's one song that really, really gets to me.

The Importance of Female Role Models

Batonga Foundation,

When I was young, my evenings were full of choruses by my mother, asking if I had completed my homework or if I needed any help. On the streets of my neighborhood, I ran into established female physicists and top-notch women in the field of law. It wasn't at all unusual to dream about becoming the CEO of a major company, or maybe becoming an engineer or a doctor. If these women surrounding me could do so, then why couldn't I?

The Right to Education Should Not be Denied

Andrea Edman,

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration for Human Rights states, "Everyone has the right to education" yet, 57 million children are currently out of school and denied this human right. There are many reasons why these children are out of school. Some come from poor families and are called on to work outside the home or watch siblings, some are malnourished, and others are out of school because they are disabled, a girl, a minority or a combination of other factors that conspire to keep them out of school.

Foundations of Change: Changing the World through Empowered Women and Education

Hanna Batlan,

As someone who has gone to a private school in an urban city, and to public school in a very suburban district, you might say I have had a very diverse education, reaching all over the spectrum of the American educational system. I have lived 73 percent of my life in schools, learning how to write well developed thoughts, find the cosine of radio waves, and how our bodies reproduce the tiny cells that make us who we are
