Now that October is finally here, Girl Up is ready to celebrate something special, and we're inviting everyone to join us.

October 11 is International Day of the Girl. The United Nations declared this day to recognize the potential of girls, especially those in developing countries, as a strong force in ending poverty.

In honor of International Day of the Girl, Girl Up is launching 11 Days of Action (11daysofaction.org), an initiative that encourages people to take part in a growing movement to advocate for the needs11 Days of Action with GirlUp and rights of adolescent girls around the world. 11 Days of Action is a celebration of the strength of girls in developing countries and the passion of Girl Up supporters to make a difference.

Starting on October 1 and leading up to October 11, each day will offer a new call-to-action, along with the story of an inspiring girl and the profile of a celebrity or public figure who is active in the fight for girls' rights. Girl Up is excited to introduce 11 Days of Action as a tool for education and action.

One way we hope people take action is through our Girls Count initiative. We are launching an effort to educate policymakers and the general public on the importance of counting girls. Approximately one person in eight around the world is a girl or young woman aged 10-24.

Girls and young women are one of the fastest growing segments of the population in developing countries, and their health and welfare is fundamental to creating and maintaining strong economies and healthy communities.

Yet accurate assessments of access to education, poverty levels and overall census activities, are hampered by the lack of official data on women and girls. Without this basic information, it is difficult to assess the need for foreign assistance and domestic social welfare programs.

Through Girls Count, we want to: Ensure girls are counted. Ensure investments in girl programs. And ensure girls are given equal access.

Help us take action. Social media is a great way to start.
