The Story

Reading is a gateway skill that allows doors to be opened around the world. Accessing opportunities becomes impossible when illiteracy is an obstacle.

There are currently over 700 million illiterate adults around the world and over half of that number is women. 175 million young people in low to mid income countries are unable to read and at current rates of progress it will take over 50 years to eradicate youth illiteracy. Reading helps to make the difference across all development sectors. If all the students in the world left school with basic reading skills, global poverty could be cut by 12 percent (that is 171 million people out of poverty!)
